In January 2026, my Dad and I visited his hometown of Sheffield, England. Growing up, I never had a lot of contact with any of my extended family, so it felt like a strange yet familiar comfort to spend time with my grandma and aunt, to sleep in the guest room of my Dad’s childhood home, and hear him recollect childhood memories while we walked down the street and passed his old primary school. While in his bedroom, he pulled out an old photo album full of 35mm film prints he had taken when he was young. Some were of him and his cousins, a few with my grandpa that I never had the chance to meet, even one photo from when he saw the queen driving by. The album cover I’ve chosen here is one of those photos he took.

The four compositions that are ‘Scabs’ were recorded in the months following that trip. It’s still challenging to fully articulate how it changed me, I’m not fully certain myself, and yet, when I sat down to record and preform these compositions, I sensed that change. That may not make a whole ton of sense, it doesn’t really to me either. I’m not sure how these compositions will be received, but to me they’re incredibly comforting. When I hear them I think of that trip to Sheffield, I think about walking down to Hunter’s Bar and stepping into a record store where I had a nice chat with the owner and bought one of my favorite albums “Since I Left You” by The Avalanches on vinyl. I think about taking the record back to my Grandma’s house and her shock upon finding out that there was a record store nearby, despite her living in that area since the 70s. I think about wandering through public paths that cut through farmland, seeing ruins of castles, hitting the pub and grabbing some fish and chips. It goes without saying I think about a lot, all the strange yet familiar things I experienced in a place both wholly new but also like somewhere I was so certain I belonged in.
